Glastonbury assisted living provider introduces seniors to virtual reality
United States, Connecticut, Hartford - 04/01/2021 — Chances are, when you think of a group of seniors in an assisted living community, an image of them strapped into VR headsets, hooting and hollering as they “skydive” out of a plane traveling at 10,000 feet doesn’t immediately come to mind. Luckily, one local senior living provider is changing the perception of seniors and technology through regularly scheduled, immersive virtual reality experiences. The Hearth at Glastonbury partners with Rendever, a company specializing in virtual reality events for seniors, to transport their residents out of their apartments, and into exciting cities, experiences, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities around the world.
“I think there’s this unfortunate misconception that anyone over the age of 65 doesn’t want to try new things,” said Katie McHale, The Hearth’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “But, in actuality, there are some things that everyone, regardless of age, would love to do and experience. I mean, who wouldn’t want to know the feeling of swimming alongside dolphins, looking out over the Paris skyline at night, or being surrounded by Golden Retriever puppies?!”
Virtual reality experiences at The Hearth, which span a variety of topics from world travel to live music performances and animal interactions, are synced through VR headsets simultaneously, meaning every senior participating sees the same thing, at the same time.
“Having the headsets synced is a huge plus, because it gives our residents a feeling of togetherness as they try new things, often for the first time,” added McHale. “And we’re open for visitors, too!
