MANCHESTER, UK - 3/21/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) -- Bolton Storyworld, a transmedia thriller that was a collaboration between Bellyfeel and the University of Bolton, is a finalist for a Learning on Screen Award 2016.
The project was produced by Bolton University students and designed for an audience of fellow students. Bellyfeel, an interactive transmedia production company, offered guidance and consultancy throughout the project. The end result was “Bolton Storyworld—Codename: Winterhill,” a transmedia thriller that takes place entirely on an audience member’s smartphone and includes video, SMS, phone calls and websites. Audience members are dropped into the action as characters. Students are going missing and they might be next.
The Learning on Screen award is the only UK award for media production in teaching, learning and research. Entries come from a wide variety of organisations and individuals producing educational media. Bolton Storyworld is nominated for the Educational Multimedia Award. The awards will be given out at a ceremony in London on 28 April.
“It’s gratifying to have this project be a finalist for the Educational Multimedia award,” Bellyfeel founder Krishna Stott said. “The students involved were the real focus, and they did amazing work. I’m glad we were able to help them and teach them about interactive storytelling.”
One Bolton University student who took part in the project, before going on to be employed by Bellyfeel, Lee Robinson, said Bolton Storyworld helped introduce him to transmedia.
“Working with transmedia, a genre that I was previously unfamiliar with, I was introduced to a wide range of skills beyond the standard media practice taught at most other universities, including, writing social media narratives, organising live events and opening up audience participation,” Robinson said. “Having the industry professionals at Bellyfeel producing the project was an invaluable learning experience for me, as well.”
