Are Silicone Implants Superior to Saline? Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon Weighs In

United States, Arizona, Scottsdale - 04/13/2021 — Dr. Steven H. Turkeltaub reveals the various reasons silicone breast implants are typically preferred over saline models, including a more natural feel, reduced rippling and more.

Scottsdale, AZ – When considering breast augmentation, prospective patients have two main categories of breast implants to choose from: silicone-filled and saline-filled. According to Scottsdale breast surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD, the best type of implant for each individual will depend on a variety of factors unique to her specific needs, aesthetic goals and preferences. However, most women end up selecting silicone implants due to the numerous advantages they have over their saline counterparts.

In a recent blog post detailing why silicone implants are better than saline implants, Dr. Turkeltaub reveals some of the more notable benefits of the former in comparison to the latter. These include:

  • A more natural feel as a result of the viscous silicone gel that closely resembles the consistency of actual breast tissue, unlike the relatively “thin” saltwater solution used to fill saline implants.
  • Enhanced durability in that the outer shell of silicone implants is less likely to develop a weakness that can lead to a hole or tear—an issue that tends to be more common with saline implants.
  • A reduced risk of implant folding or wrinkling, which can be visible on the breasts themselves—particularly when implants are placed above the muscle and/or a patient has thin skin or minimal breast tissue.
  • A greater number of profile and gel cohesiveness options that allow for enhanced personalization—silicone implants are available in several different round configurations (profiles) and gel consistencies whereas saline implants offer no such choices for consistencies and have only two choices for profiles.
  • Rarely any visible change in volume or shape in the event a rupture does occur, avoiding the immediate aesthetic “emergency” that can occur when saline implants rupture and instantaneously deflate as the saline solution exits the implant and is absorbed by the body.
  • A reduced risk of stretching and deformity of breast tissues over time, which is seen more often in saline implants regardless of whether they are placed above or below the muscle.

Despite these numerous advantages of silicone implants, Dr. Turkeltaub does note that saline implants have a few pros of their own. For example, saline implants can be inserted into the breasts prior to being filled, allowing for a shorter incision (and, therefore, a smaller scar). Additionally, filling the implants once already inside the breasts can be beneficial in addressing breast size inconsistencies to some degree, as one implant can be filled more or less than the other in order to help achieve more optimal symmetry.

Ultimately, the Scottsdale breast surgeon concludes that the pros of silicone implants far outweigh those of saline implants—and that silicone is the optimal choice for the vast majority of patients: “Silicone breast implants are far more popular and desirable and provide overwhelmingly more natural-looking, reliable, and superior results than saline.”
