TYTON BIOSCIENCES RECEIVES FASHION POSITIVE PLUS AWARD TOWARDS ASSESSMENT OF PRODUCTS FOR CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFICATION

DANVILLE, VIRGINIA, USA - 12/03/2018 — Tyton BioSciences LLC, a world leader in mixed-textile recycling technology, has been chosen by Fashion Positive PLUS to receive an award to support assessment of the company’s products towards Gold level Cradle to Cradle certification. Fashion Positive PLUS is a membership-based sector initiative of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII). PLUS is comprised of apparel companies driving the circular fashion movement, including Gap Inc./Athleta, Eileen Fisher, G-Star RAW, H&M, Loomstate, Kering Group, Mara Hoffman, Marks & Spencer and Stella McCartney. The award will help Tyton pave the way for wider adoption of the company’s clean recycled products throughout the fashion industry.

In the United States alone, more than 25 billion pounds of textiles is produced each year according to the Council for Textile Recycling. Eighty five percent (85%), or 21 billion pounds, of textiles are sent to landfills and account for more than 5% of all municipal waste, though some estimates are higher. Globally, the textile and fashion industries are leading polluters that the Ellen MacArthur Foundation says are responsible for more than 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The world needs a clean recycling technology that can convert waste clothing back into new clothes, just like the recycling of aluminum cans and paper. Tyton technology solves this challenge.

Tyton’s water-based recycling technology can recover cotton and polyester from blended textiles, which account for the majority of garments. Tyton’s approach is very clean, cost-efficient and soon ready for adoption by textile manufacturers. A key selling point and differentiator is Tyton’s ability to produce inputs for fibers at competitive quality and price to virgin inputs. Fashion designers and global brands are clamoring for high-quality, affordable fibers made from recycled material, and Tyton’s technology delivers both cotton and polyester to meet this demand.

Tyton CEO, Peter Majeranowski said, “It’s a great honor to receive this award from an organization like C2CPII that shares our core values of making the world cleaner and healthier. This award helps us pursue an important certification that will give the fashion industry confidence that our technology not only fills the gap in the circular fashion economy but also has a positive environmental impact. One day soon, I look forward to when we all toss our old clothes in the recycling bin next to our paper, plastic and metals.”

Administered by the C2CPII, the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program is an independent, third-party verified certification program that certifies products and materials that are developed to respect human and environmental health, designed for future use cycles, and that utilize clean energy and water throughout the supply chain. Cradle to Cradle product certification is awarded at five levels (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum), with each higher level imposing a more rigorous set of requirements. The lowest score in any quality category establishes the product’s overall score. Certified products are required to show continuous improvement every two years.

According to C2CPII, certification at the Gold level verifies that there are no relevant human or environmental risks in a material’s chemistry. These risks can include plausible exposure to substances known or suspected to cause cancer, birth defects, genetic damage, or reproductive harm. Gold-level materials have passed a thorough assessment on every chemical substance in a material down to 100 parts per million. In addition, Gold certified materials are produced using at least 50% renewable energy and outputting 100% clean effluent, and a positive impact strategy also has been developed by the certification recipient to address supply chain-relevant social issues.

Tyton COO, Conor Hartman, remarked, “We are receiving real interest from numerous top global fashion brands who want to partner with Tyton, invest, and take this technology to market. This Innovation Award is yet another vote of confidence in our capabilities, and importantly in our environmental values. We look forward to bringing more like-minded partners and investors onto our team so we can deploy this technology widely and quickly around the planet.”
