ANN ARBOR, MI - 10/27/2018 — Everyone loves Halloween. Candy, dressing up, and parties everywhere. Plus ghosts, goblins, and Jack-O-Lanterns. As a criminal defense attorney, the number of calls I get will always increase the day or two after Halloween. Let me give some tips on how to stay out of trouble during the holiday.
Stay Off the Roads
Halloween is a big party time. Which means there is more drinking. Cops know this, and they like to crack down on drinking and driving during any holiday. The police know there are more people on the roads who have been drinking or under the influence of drugs. Police will try to pull over as many people as they can.
A driving under the influence charges can have a great affect on your life. Possible jail time, lengthy probation, and consequences to your driver’s license. Not to mention the stress and anxiety of going through the court system and facing a judge.
There is an easy way to avoid this fate: Don’t drive! Plan ahead. Download the Uber or Lyft app on your phone or call a cab.
College Student Trouble
As a criminal defense attorney in Ann Arbor, MI, I represent many university students. Halloween means party time for many college students. But party time can be trouble. Common criminal charges I may see around this time are disorderly conduct, minor in possession of alcohol, possession of fake identification, and assault charges. These types of charges are almost always alcohol-related.
Think when you drink! Don’t put yourself in an avoidable situation that you may regret later. It’s not worth it. As in the above section, there are many police officers on the streets during Halloween time. This means there are more eyes on you, and more chances to get in trouble for the same actions that might go unseen if you didn’t do that on a holiday.
Call a Lawyer if You Get in Trouble
If you get arrested or receive a ticket over Halloween don’t hesitate to call a lawyer. Most lawyers offer free initial consultations without any obligation on your part.
Don’t simply walk into court and plead guilty. It’s a simple action that could have great consequences for your future. Whenever you’re charged with a crime you have rights. You can fight the case through trial or make a deal with the prosecutor to make your life easier. Both of these options should be explored. If you get in trouble this Halloween reach out to a local attorney to see what can be done about your case.
