Home Generator Backlogs and Shipment Lead Times Greatest in History

Lake Havasu City, AZ - 03/25/2021 — Home Standby and Portable Generator Options Thin—Manufacturers Struggle to Supply

Home standby and portable generator manufacturers can’t keep up with demand. Shipping times to retailers and distributors extend to 16 weeks and beyond. After Hurricane Sandy, manufacturer lead times stretched to eight weeks. Sandy was just one event. The record breaking 2020 Hurricane Season, a series of unrelated severe weather events, and a global pandemic strained the industry and drained inventory.

In a CNBC interview amid blackouts that left millions of Texans without power, Generac CEO Aaron Jagdfeld said, “We can’t make them fast enough, and we’re doing everything we can to supply more product in the market.”

Generator shortages extend to home standby generators and portable generators including all major brands.

Travis LaVallie at Norwall (www.norwall.com) can’t see an end to long lead times. Norwall currently lists popular models with lead times at 1-12 weeks, but that requires manufacturers to deliver on time.

Severe weather and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to shipping delays. Generator manufacturers were designated an essential resource and worked at full capacity throughout the year. Stay-at-home orders pushed homeowners to prepare for power outages or the worst-case scenario, which depleted inventory at Norwall PowerSystems faster than manufacturers delivered.

Twelve hurricanes and tropical storms made landfall in the United States, and three more came close enough to cause damage and power outages. A typical hurricane season turns busy from the end of July through the end of September. Last year’s tropical activity started in May and stayed busy through October, breaking records through the season's end. Louisiana took hits from two major hurricanes, a category 2 hurricane, and two tropical storms.

The Iowa Derecho, Texas Snowstorm, and other severe weather events added demand to scant supplies.

La Niña conditions in the Pacific Ocean contributed to the record 2020 hurricane season. The NOAA expects the La Niña to continue, increasing the likelihood of another very active 2021 Hurricane Season.

Norwall has a limited offering of Portable and Standby Generators In Stock including several popular portables from Generac and Cummins, and standby generators from Briggs and Stratton. Order now if you need a generator before the June 1 start of the Hurricane Season.
