SKOKIE, IL - 01/15/2018 — Dr. Rakhee M. Bowker is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics for Rush Medical College. She was selected as Top Female Professional in Healthcare for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few women are chosen for this distinction based on their years of experience in the field, professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, and contributions to their communities. Dr. Bowker is being recognized for her 10 years of professional experience in the healthcare industry. She has demonstrated success honing her expertise in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Her key responsibilities for Rush Medical College include caring for critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit, providing antenatal consultation to pregnant women with pregnancies affected by fetal anomalies through Rush’s Fetal and Neonatal Medicine Center, and training future health care professionals. Dr. Bowker’s responsibilities as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Rush include teaching physicians-in-training and medical students studying pediatrics regarding the art and science of caring for critically ill newborns and premature infants.

Dr. Bowker knew from an early age that she wanted to be a physician. After graduating first in her high school class, she went on to Brown University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with Departmental Honors in Biomedical Ethics in 2004. Dr. Bowker went on to complete her medical training at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons where she received her Doctorate of Medicine degree in 2009. In 2012 Dr. Bowker completed a Pediatric Residency training program at Columbia University Medical Center’s Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. In 2016 she completed a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Bowker remains active in her community and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. In 2008 she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society from Columbia University. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Glasgow-Rubin Achievement Award from the American Medical Women’s Association, which is awarded to women graduating in the top 10 percent of their medical school class. In 2014 she was inducted into the International Women’s Leadership Association. While at Northwestern University she was the recipient of the First and Third Year Fellow’s Basic and Translational Research Prize from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for her work investigating the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis, a devastating disease affecting premature infants. She has received additional recognition for her contributions to pediatric research including receiving the Frederic M. Kenney Award for Outstanding Abstract Presentation by a Fellow at the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research Annual Meeting and the SPR Travel Award to Enhance Diversity in the Research Workforce, in recognition of achievements in Pediatric Research, at the 2017 Annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in San Francisco, CA. For 2017 she was selected as “Top Neonatologist of the Year” by the International Association of Top Professionals and for 2018 is being considered to have a feature in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine.
Looking back, Dr. Bowker attributes her success to her training, perseverance, and incredible mentors she has had along the way. She is passionate about improving the lives of critically ill newborns and their families. In the future, she hopes to continue to make a difference through contributions in pediatric research, providing outstanding patient care, and saving lives, one baby at a time.
