SYRACUSE, NY - 05/31/2018 — Laurence Thomas, Ph.D, Professor of Political Science and Philosophy for Syracuse University was just recently selected as Top Professor of the Year for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the property development industry.  

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With over 3 decades of professional experience in writing and in education Dr. Thomas has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field.As a dynamic results-driven leader, Dr. Thomas has demonstrated success not only as a Professor of Philosophy but also as a successful author and public speaker.Dr. Thomas has authored over 80 articles and four books: Living Morally: A Psychology of Moral Character (Temple University Press, 1989), Vessels of Evil (Temple University Press, 1993), Sexual Rights and Human Orientation (Roman & Littlefield, 1999), and The Family and the Political Self (Cambridge University Press, 2006). His articles on moral theory, on social philosophy and on American Blacks and Jews have been widely anthologized and have appeared in volumes with the distinguished legal theorist Ronald Dworkin and the political theorist Michael Walzer. 

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Thomas has been recognized worldwide and has received many awards, accolades and featured in several publications.For 2019 he is being considered for a feature in T.I.P (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals. He was listed in Who's Who Among American Teachers and Who's Who in Social Science. Dr. Thomas's teaching has been widely noted and praised, including a feature in the Education Section of The New York Times (26 April, 1992) and he was named Syracuse University's Scholar-Teacher of the Year in 1993.

Aside from Dr. Thomas’s successful career, he is also a world renowned sought after lecturer and speaker who has held appointments at Notre Dame, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Oberlin College. In 1994 Dr. Thomas was a visiting scholar in the Religion Department at the University of Michigan. He was Andrew Mellon Faculty Fellow at Harvard University in 1978-79, received an NEH award to conduct a seminar on "Competing Rights Claims" in the summer of 1981, and was a Fellow of the National Humanities Center in 1982-83. He has given the Lawrence Kohlberg Lecture at the Association of Moral Education (1993) and the fifth Meyer Warren Tenenbaum and Labelle Tenenbaum Lecture at the University of South Carolina. In July 1997, he presented the Kovler Lectures at the Medical School of the University of Cape Town, South Africa; these lectures will become part of his forthcoming book on moral objectivity and evil. He has been the Lincoln Lecturer (Fall 2002) at Arizona State University, in October of 2000, he lectured before Queen Beatrix of Holland, and in November 2004, he lectured at the Royal Institute of Philosophy in the United Kingdom.

Currently, Dr. Thomas is working on essays such as "Kant on Equality" and "Autonomy, Behavior, and Moral Goodness". Two of Thomas's recent publications include "Upside-Down Equality: A Response to Kantian Thought", and "Forgiving the Unforgivable". And one of his forthcoming essays is "Autonomy, Behavior, and Moral Goodness", in which he challenges the view that autonomy is always good. Another one of Thomas's forthcoming essays is on living a meaningful life. Occasionally Thomas writes an Op-Ed piece for the local newspaper. His latest contribution is on terrorism and self-indulgence. 

Dr. Thomas earned his Ph.D and MA in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and his Bachelors in Philosophy from the University of Maryland.The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Dr. Thomas for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.He is a brilliant, talented and a leader in Education and Philosophy. Looking back, Dr. Thomas attributes his success to his perseverance, mentors he has had along the way, and staying passionate in all of his endeavors.Dr. Thomas says he has been blessed and he loves doing what he is doing, and feels this is just the beginning. He also says that his students have been a “profound source of his inspiration.” When he is not working he enjoys reading and traveling.For the future, he will continue to thrive as a Professor and hopes to continue to inspire and make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
