Australia Celebrates Inaugural ‘I am a Toastmaster’ Day
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - 05/23/2018 — The inaugural ‘I am a Toastmaster Day’ will be celebrated by the Australian chapters of Toastmasters International on the 1st of June, 2018. On that day, members of Toastmasters—the world’s largest public speaking community group—will wear their membership badges, lanyards and other forms of identification to promote the organisation.
The nationwide day is the brainchild of Juliana Jamal, the public relations manager for Southern NSW.
‘Many people are held back in their careers by their fear of public speaking,’ Jamal said recently. ‘They don’t apply for promotions when they know the role involves speaking in public. At Toastmasters, we focus on helping you overcome any fear you may have, and also support you in fulfilling your leadership potential.’
Toastmasters was started by founder Ralph Smedley in California in 1924. Since then it has spread to 141 countries and has over 300,000 members. The organisation began in Australia in 1957 in Wollongong. It is now in every state and territory and boasts over 10,000 members.
‘We always wear badges at our meetings,’ Jamal said. ‘But the badges normally come off when we walk out the door. I realised that by wearing our badges on one specific day across the country, we could promote conversations in the workplace and in the community, and encourage people to visit a Toastmaster club in their area. The possibilities are endless when one finds their voice and courage!’
