American Airline’s Sailing Crew brings home three trophies from the 2018 Interline Regatta!!!

MIAMI BEACH, FL - 11/06/2018 — The Interline Regatta brings together airline crews from around the world to compete in a series of sailboat races in the British Virgin Islands using charter yachts from the Moorings BVI.This was the 37th year of airline competition based primarily on the skill of the crew, since no modifications of the boats are allowed, and each must sail with the inventory provided with the boat. American Airline’s crew took 1st the Best North American Entry, 1st in Team Sailing (with Lufthansa as the teammate) and 2nd in the competitive 50 ft class. The crew was made up of American Airlines crew members Patrick Timothy (MIA/767/FO), Michael Pierce (MIA/737/CA), Ken Halliday (MIA/737/FO), Lisa Sanford (MIA/737/FO), Tom Polanski (BOS/737/FO), and Fred Strauss (ORD/767/CA retired).Additional crewmembers consisted of Don Waller (Skipper of racing sailboat), Angie Kapec, Sue Epperson,Anna Sendl and Cindy Goulet.

The first two days were used to practice and become familiar with the racing characteristics of the boats. The next two days provided great sailing conditions with moderate winds and sunshine. The typical race day included a windward leeward race followed by a race around islands, finishing at a new destination each evening. The American Airlines crew managed to be tied for first in class with two firsts and two second place finishes after the first two days of racing. A rest day provided some time to enjoy the British Virgin Islands atmosphere and begin planning for the next two days of racing. Two additional days of racing with consistent winds ended with tough competition against other airline sponsored teams. The American Airlines team managed four additional seconds with only a minute or less separating them from the first place finisher in the 50 foot class. On one of the races the AA crew start second to last place but never gave up and was able to work its way up in the fleet to pass almost everyone, finishing in second place. The entire crew is looking forward to 2019 race and will start gearing up in the spring with the hope of entering two sponsored boats flying the AA flag.
