AboutHer.com Smashes Saudi Women Stereotypes

NEW YORK - 03/24/2018 — AboutHer.com, an online lifestyle portal dedicated to women living in the Arab region, has published a piece addressing the eight most common stereotypes and misconceptions of Saudi Women. As Saudi Arabia builds on its Vision 2030 objectives, a key part of which is to provide women with more economic opportunities, the website, which aims at broadening the narrative of Saudi women in the media, has outlined their various roles and realities that often go unmentioned.

Since the ascension of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman in 2017, Saudi Arabia has witnessed key reforms aimed at enhancing the lives of the Kingdom’s women. In less than a year, the decades-old driving ban on female motorists has been rescinded, key appointments of women in leadership roles have been made, sectors previously dominated by men such as the armed forces have opened up to women, and public spheres of life include more women than ever, small victories in the grand scheme of things but victories nonetheless in the long journey ahead.

Described as “the definitive portal on Arab women,” AboutHer.com is smashing the eight most common stereotypes and misconceptions people have about women from the Kingdom in its latest piece, starting with their access to education. One of the most common stereotypes of Saudi women is that they are not educated. However, the Kingdom has invested in education for its women over the last decades, which today has resulted in female students achieving higher success rates than their male counterparts in the university system. In fact, women accounted for 52 percent of all university graduates in 2015.

Another misconception about Saudi women often cited is that they are not entrepreneurial. However, female entrepreneurship is currently on a steep growth trajectory in Saudi Arabia. A decade ago, women accounted for only 4 percent of the Kingdom’s entrepreneurs but by 2017 this number had increased to almost 40 percent, resonating global trends that have seen female enterprises increase 10 percent in two years across 63 major economies. This has been in part due to the Saudi government introducing a number of initiatives to support aspiring female entrepreneurs.

From sports, to style, to government, the website addresses the contributions and important role of Saudi women in the Kingdom’s advancement and journey towards modernization. The piece gives special mention to iconic female figures in Saudi Arabia such as Raha Moharrak who became the youngest Arab and Saudi woman to reach the top of Mount Everest, Halah Al Hamrani, the first Saudi female boxing and kick-boxing trainer, and Haifaa al-Mansour, one of Saudi Arabia’s best-known film directors.
